Cochin Cochin or Kochi is known all over the world as the Queen of the Arabian Sea. It is Kerala's commercial capital. It is a metropolitan city and has an urban populace that has an occidental approach towards life. Even though Cochin is a modern city there are plenty of options for the tourists. There are a number of other tourist attractions such as St. Francis' Church, Dutch Palace, Santa Cruz Cathedral, Synagogue, Chinese fishing nets at Fort Cochin and the Coonen Cross at Mattancherry. These are symbolic of times when Cochin had trade relationships with Arab, China and Rome as well as the European imperialism that succeeded it. There are some old houses near Fort Cochin. These still have that colonial air about them. There are certain localities in Cochin that resemble the hamlets of Netherlands, Portugal and England. Even now the urban population of Cochin engages itself in trading.

Park Avenue: Park Avenue is like the lungs of this metropolis. It is lined with trees and thus well shaded. Its name has been derived from the parks on the western side of Park Avenue, which have been laid out beautifully. These parks are close to the Lake Vembanad's backwaters. From here you would get a lovely view of the harbor at Cochin. Here you would see an age old Siva temple as well as some erstwhile government buildings. There are some other attractions such as the General Hospital, the Cochin Corporation office, the main boat jetty and the District Court. Some of the best educational organizations in Kerala are located near the Park Avenue.

Cochin is connected to the Willington Island by way of the Venduruthy Bridge, which doubles up as a road and a railway track. The Willington Island has been named after Lord Willington, who was a viceroy of India. It is a four mile long island. It has two zones - the civil zone and the defense zone. The naval aerodrome and command are at the defense zone. The Cochin Port Trust looks after the civil zone and the harbor. A number of central government bodies including the Customs House are located in the civil zone. The railway terminus on the island is always busy. Various companies and some of the best hotels in Cochin are at the Willington Island. Here you would also find housing colonies meant for staff members, banks, schools, parks and hospitals.
