Mandawa: the town was inhabited by merchant families and was founded in the mid 18th century. These wealthy families constructed huge havelis or mansions for their residence. These mansions are beautifully painted. With passage of time, the merchants migrated and these havelis were left unused. These magnificent havelis have now become tourist attractions.

The town is situated in the district of Jhunjhunu in northern Rajasthan. It falls in the Shekhawati region of the state. This region is well known for its beautifully painted palaces and havelis. The town is located 25 kilometers from Jhunjhunu town. It is 210 kilometers from the city of Bikaner and 275 kilometers from Delhi.

The most popular tourist attractions here are the painted havelis. The themes of the frescos have changed with time. Earlier frescos featured mythology themes of local legends, portraits, and animals, wrestling and hunting scenes. In the 19th century, themes reflected the influence of the British Raj on Indian culture.
